FASTING
Both the Old Testament and New Testament teach the value of fasting, which is abstaining from food or drink in order to focus on prayer and seeking God's will.
Fasting is mentioned over 70 times throughout Scripture. In the Old Testament, there were two types of fasting: public and private. Both types offer great spiritual benefits.
Through many examples of people in the Bible who fasted, we can know that God grants supernatural revelation and wisdom through this practice. Moses, Daniel, and even Jesus fasted! Scripture tells us that fasting will help us grow a more intimate relationship with Christ and will open our eyes to what He wants to teach us.
THE WORD ON FASTING
Matthew 6:16-18 - “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Joel 2:12 - “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
Daniel 10:3 - I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, for the full three weeks.
Ezra 8:23 - So we fasted and implored our God for this, and he listened to our entreaty.
Isaiah 58:6 - “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?
Acts 13:2 - While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
Psalm 69:10 - When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach.
Acts 14:23 - And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.
Exodus 34:28 - So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights. He neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.
Nehemiah 1:4 - As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
The Proper Attitude and Heart (Matthew 6:16-18)
Jesus teaches against making a public show of fasting to gain the approval of others. Instead, He instructs His followers to fast in secret, focusing on their relationship with God
"But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
2. True Fasting and Social Justice (Isaiah 58:6-7)
The prophet Isaiah explains that God desires a fast that changes hearts, breaks the chains of injustice, and helps the oppressed.
"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter?"
3. Repentance and Seeking God (Joel 2:12)
Throughout the Old Testament, fasting is frequently tied to mourning sin and turning back to God with sincerity.
“'Yet even now,' declares the Lord, 'return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.'”
4. Preparation for Spiritual Breakthrough (Mark 9:29)
In the New Testament, fasting is sometimes coupled with prayer as a powerful tool for spiritual strengthening and overcoming difficult situations.
And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting."
5. Humility vs. Pride (Luke 18:12-14)
Through the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, Jesus warns against boasting about fasting. True fasting should foster humility before God rather than self-righteousness
THESE FASTED
Jesus: Fasted for 40 days and nights in the wilderness before beginning His public ministry, relying on scripture to prepare for temptation.
Moses: Fasted for 40 days and nights on Mount Sinai while receiving the Ten Commandments from God.
Queen Esther: Called for a three-day fast (without food or water) for all Jews to seek divine protection before approaching the king on behalf of her people.
Daniel: Observed multiple fasts, including a 21-day "partial fast" where he abstained from meat and rich foods to seek understanding from God.
David: Fasted to mourn the loss of loved ones and when pleading for the healing of his sick child.
The Early Church: Apostles like Paul and Barnabas incorporated fasting and prayer into their worship, especially when ordaining elders or setting out on missionary journeys.

Fast Day (2) Wednesday
Woke-up Very Very Sick, with an excreciating headache, throwing up
I constantly prayed throughout the day
I had to cancel meetings,
Throwing up only water, dry heaving,
Bad headache persisted to the point of going the emergency room at 5:30.
Diagnosed with a stomach virus. They gave me Intravenous medicine it helped-some.
Left hospital 10pm.
I really wanted to break the fast and eat something to help the stomach virus but I did not. I prayed...God said I was good and to continue fasting..
I continued fasting. Went to sleep with pressured type of headache.
At this point for two days I had no water, liquids or food.
I fasted several times in the past for three days with no water or food.
I went to sleep very miserable
Fast Day (3) Thursday
Woke-up with a pressure-type of headache.
Went for my prayer walk
Felt a little better
Still was not able to look at my computer screen for long periods. Did not get much work done, worked in the yard and prayed mostly.
There was a a kinda-sorta-God-only Kinda Blessing with the stomach virus. I have been praying for deliverance from coffee. I believe that throwing-up and that virus took all the caffeine out me...I have absolutely no taste for Coffee.
Fast Day (4) Friday
Woke-up with a little pressure, not as bad as the day before.
A whole lot more energy and excitement during my prayer walk.
